Two parallel lines intersected by a transversal form corresponding pairs of angles that are congruent.

Adjacent angles share a common vertex and a common ray.
Two intersecting lines form pairs of adjacent angles that are supplementary. Also, two intersecting lines form pairs of congruent angles, called vertical angles.
